Tensions Rise in Bayelsa Over Unauthorized Political Gathering Plans

By Bigeyecomedy

Bayelsa State has recently found itself at the center of a growing political controversy following an unverified report suggesting that a political figure, George Turner, is planning to host the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the well-known Tombia Roundabout in the state capital, Yenagoa. The report, which first gained attention on Facebook, has prompted swift and decisive reactions from the Bayelsa State Government, raising questions about the use of public spaces for political activities without proper authorization.

In a strongly worded statement, the Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Douye Diri, made it clear that no such meeting or political event will be permitted within the state unless it is explicitly approved by the state government. The Governor warned that no individual or group regardless of status or political alignment will be allowed to host public gatherings on state-owned infrastructure without following due process.

Governor Diri’s Position: “No Unauthorized Political Activities in Bayelsa”

Reacting to the online rumors, Governor Diri directed all security service commanders in Bayelsa to remain on high alert. The Governor emphasized that public peace and safety must be safeguarded at all costs and that any attempt to organize unauthorized gatherings within the state would be treated as a potential threat to law and order.

“The peace and stability of Bayelsa State is non-negotiable,” Governor Diri said in an official communication. “No one has the right to import political unrest or insecurity into Bayelsa. We will not allow any group or individual to violate the sanctity of public order in our dear state.”

He stressed that all public spaces whether roads, schools, stadiums, or other public infrastructures—are owned and managed by the Bayelsa State Government, and therefore, no person or organization can use these facilities for any public event without express written approval from the appropriate authorities.

Tombia Roundabout: A Strategic Venue and Symbolic Space

The proposed venue for the alleged event the Tombia Roundabout is not just a major intersection in Yenagoa but also a symbolic space for public expression. It has historically been used for rallies, protests, and celebrations. Any attempt to utilize this area for political purposes naturally draws the attention of state authorities, especially in a volatile political climate.

By zeroing in on this location, George Turner whose political intentions remain unclear may have triggered concern within the state administration about potential political destabilization, particularly as the state prepares for key developmental and electoral milestones

Security on High Alert: Commanders Briefed

Governor Diri has reportedly instructed the heads of all security agencies in Bayelsa, including the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the military, to take proactive measures to monitor the situation. He made it clear that no public gathering especially one involving figure from outside the state should be permitted without going through the legally mandated process of obtaining government clearance.

The Governor also warned that any individual or group attempting to circumvent these protocols will be held accountable, noting that the state has invested heavily in maintaining peace and cannot afford disruptions fueled by external political agendas.

He urged security forces to be vigilant, professional, and proactive, especially as political activities intensify in different parts of the country.

Bayelsa’s Message to External Actors: “Do Not Import Insecurity”

One of the Governor’s most pointed remarks was directed at politicians from outside Bayelsa State who may be using local figures to advance their agenda within the state.

“Let me be clear: Bayelsa is not a playground for outsiders to stir up conflict or chaos. Anyone attempting to import insecurity into our peaceful state will meet the full weight of the law,” he declared.

This remark is believed to be a reference to alleged political maneuvers being orchestrated by external actors through proxies like George Turner. While Turner’s political affiliations have not been officially confirmed, he is known to have deep connections within both state and federal political circles.

Clarifying the State’s Stance on the Federal Government

Governor Diri was quick to emphasize that his administration’s actions should not be misinterpreted as opposition to the Federal Government. On the contrary, he stated clearly that the people of Bayelsa—and the Ijaw ethnic group more broadly remain supportive of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We are not at war with the Federal Government. We are working in partnership with President Tinubu, especially as it concerns developmental projects that are critical to Bayelsa’s future,” the Governor noted.

He specifically praised President Tinubu for approving the Phase Two contract for the Nembe-Brass Road, a long-awaited infrastructural development that will improve access to one of the most remote and underdeveloped parts of the state. The project has been seen as a major win for the Tinubu administration in Bayelsa and has helped build goodwill between the state and the center.

Calls for Continued Federal-State Collaboration

In addition to commending ongoing federal support, Governor Diri also used the occasion to appeal for additional partnerships with the federal government. He identified several key infrastructure projects that require urgent attention and funding:

The Ekeremor-Agei Road Project

The Oporoma-Okubie-Koluama Road Network

These roads, according to the Governor, are critical to opening up the southern and riverine regions of the state to economic activity, education, and health services. He invited the Federal Government and private investors to collaborate with the state to accelerate the completion of these infrastructure projects.

“We are committed to transforming Bayelsa into a hub of regional development, and we are calling on all stakeholders federal institutions, development partners, and private investors to work with us to achieve this vision,” he added.

Bayelsa’s Commitment to Peace and Development

Governor Diri reiterated that his administration has made considerable progress in fostering peace and stability across the state, particularly in communities that have historically experienced political tension, militancy, or communal disputes.

According to state officials, coordinated efforts between government agencies and local communities have significantly reduced violent incidents, enabled infrastructure development, and improved the investment climate in Bayelsa.

“Our commitment is to the peace, progress, and prosperity of our people. We will not allow anyone to disrupt that,” Diri stressed.

The Way Forward: Rule of Law and Democratic Responsibility

The Bayelsa State Government has emphasized that its actions are not meant to suppress political expression but to ensure that all political activities within the state adhere to the rule of law. The administration has encouraged political stakeholders to channel their ambitions and projects through legal and peaceful means, maintaining the dignity and sovereignty of the state’s institutions.

“All we ask is that people follow the law. If you wish to host a meeting or rally, apply for approval. If you want to use state-owned infrastructure, seek permission. That is how democracy works,” said a spokesperson from the Bayelsa State Ministry of Information.

Final Thoughts: A Delicate Balance Between Politics and Order

As the country continues to navigate a complex political landscape, Bayelsa State’s situation is a reflection of broader tensions between local governance, federal influence, and political ambition. While George Turner’s reported plans to host the FCT Minister have not been confirmed through official channels, the state government’s reaction underscores a deep concern about the use of state resources for partisan purposes without proper authorization.

Governor Diri’s firm stance signals that Bayelsa will not allow itself to become a pawn in broader national political games. Instead, the state remains focused on development, security, and building partnerships that uplift its people do not distract from their progress.

As the situation continues to unfold, observers will be watching closely to see whether the planned gathering materializes and how state and federal actors respond to the growing scrutiny around the use of public space for political purposes in Nigeria.
